Pelosi, “You have to pass it to find out what’s in it…” is a misstatement:

Vox here and context here.

“You’ve heard about the controversies, the process about the bill…but we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it – away from the fog of the controversy.

  • I pursued the “Pelosi” text link and skimmed her speech with interest. Especially the following–the lead-in to her famous quote:

“You’ve heard about the controversies within the bill, the process about the bill, one or the other. But I don’t know if you have heard that it is legislation for the future, not just about health care for America, but about a healthier America, where preventive care is not something that you have to pay a deductible for or out of pocket. Prevention, prevention, prevention — it’s about diet, not diabetes. It’s going to be very, very exciting.

“But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy. “

So there it is: “Prevention, prevention, prevention–it’s about diet, not diabetes.”

Fast-forward to 2017. Where in the ACA (ObamaCare) program is there much about prevention? Early detection through testing, yes. Actual prevention? I can’t think of anything.

And diet? It would sound like the Miller Plan (veggies and exercise), except that I think we’ve agreed that neither of these are included in ObamaCare coverage. Maybe primary care physicians get a few bucks for telling me to eat my veggies and exercise, but there’s no subsidy or discount for eating right and exercising. Nor is there any penalty for pursuing a diet exclusively consisting of fried foods and sugary soft drinks while sitting on the couch watching TV.

Where’s the prevention? Where’s the diet?
